I am an Artist!

Cards, Interactive cards, So Suzy stamps, Stamplorations, Watercolor

Its 5h30 now as I write this and I’m awake cause I have a raging fever and I’m waiting for the meds to take effect so I can go back to sleep! Whats keeping me awake is also thinking of all the cards I want to make… so I can’t be that sick after all LOL… or I’m just delirious! So forgive me if I start rambling (more than usual) or say something stupid… like my post title!

I also thought I should catch up with my blogging as I’ve had little time the last week since our return from our beach vacation in France, what with having 4-5 kids in the house as my kids had friends stay over and my hubby being away to look after his sick mum. So grab a mug/drink and bear with me while I share my thoughts with you.

I was starting another free 21 day meditation by Oprah and Deepak called Desire and Destiny and the first session had us close our eyes and ask ourselves who we are. So thats what I did and the first answer that instantly popped in my mind was “I am an Artist”! That answer really surprised me, as I have never considered myself creative, let alone an artist, because being an artist meant being good at my art and I’m a long way from that.

Since I started making cards though, I have learnt to be creative. Yes, I do believe creativity does not have to be innate but can be developed and cultivated and influenced by everything and everyone around us.  I have grown so much creatively, in the last year, just by trying new techniques and learning how to draw and watercolour. So now I am accepting that being an artist just means creating, good or bad, it doesn’t really matter, as long as I enjoy it. I can thus openly say: I am an Artist!

With that in mind, I want to share my first attempt at trying to create a watercolour scene. Its also a shaker card with the seahorse in the shaker part so when you shake it, it moves along with the sequins.

I first water coloured my seahorse, from So Suzy stamps, with my Zigs watercolour brushes. I actually did it in the car on our long drive from Germany to France, using my Misti as a support to stamp and colour! LoL! I then fussy cut it and put it aside.

Back on a normal table, I tried creating an algae forest with my Zigs, on watercolour paper, then stamped the plants, also from So Suzy. I mounted foam tape around this scene and added sequins and my seahorse in it.

This went behind the blue card front, which is a part of a set of embossed cards my friend Monika from Creative with Monika, gave me, so I don’t know where its from. I had first coloured it with Distress inks and splattered water on it to create an underwater look before cutting a stitched rectangle window. The die cut word “hugs”, from Stamplorations, was also coloured with distress inks and water splattered before I die cut it with my Big Shot Plus.

I then mounted the whole card with foam tape, on a light blue card and it was finished! It didn’t take me too long and I’m happy I tried it. I will continue to try and play more with my watercolours as it gives me a lot of pleasure.. and thats what counts after all!

Thanks for bearing with me till the end and your comments are always appreciated!

Today I made a simple Shaker card using the stamps from the Calling All Sistahs collection, which I heat embossed using Wow silver embossing powder. The sequins came from a limited edition of Pretty Pink Posh. I added Washi Tape as a border and the card was done!

Thanks for stopping by and be sure to come back tomorrow where I’ll be sharing my card for the 3rd Encouragement challenge over at the Calling All Sistahs blog, in the hopes that you’ll join in the fun!

Create Kind Cards

Cards, Die cuts, Interactive cards, stamping

Awhile ago, in my post “Artistic Compromise” here, many of you told me you sent your cards to some charities or homes. I have been thinking about this and would really like to do so but I couldn’t really find places to send them to. So I decided to create an Instagram and Facebook page called “Create Kind Cards”, where we could share the cards we make and the places we send them to, so others who want to, can send their cards too. So if any of you make cards and give them to hospitals or retirement homes…, please tag #Createkindcards on Instagram or Facebook.

This shaker card today will go to Altenew’s “Celebrating Parents Card Drive.”. It was made in a record breaking time (for me), about 40minutes I think, as I really wanted to join Muse’s challenge this week before I went to bed! I stamped the Hero Arts Hydrangea layering stamp with Hero Arts Ombre ink pad “Pool to Navy” and then used a purple Prismacolor pencil to add more detail. I went over it with Sprectrum Noir clear sparkle pen to give the sequins some shine competition!

Those white bits are the sparkles from the pen, you can see it better in action here! I stamped the leaves and used my Zigs clean color real brushes, to add more detail to the layered leaves. As this card would be a Mother’s Day card for a senior in a retirement home, I wanted to add a sentiment that would really touch her. So I turned to my favourite Mother’s Day stamp set from Stamplorations “Strong Women” set which I stamped in Versafine ink.

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you will all support me in this by sharing this info around the card making community and letting me know of any organisations who need cards. Have a great week!

Breast Cancer Awareness Blog Hop + Prize

Cards, Heat embossing, Interactive cards

Hi, its the 17th of the month again and time for the “Calling All Sistahs” Cancer Awareness Blog hop! Every month on this day, we join this hop to remind you to check yourself or schedule that mammography if you haven’t had one recently. Heres a link that shows you how to  examine yourself. Early detection can save a life as Michele Gross, of CAS-ual Fridays Stamps discovered, after her own discovery of breast cancer. Because of the early detection, she recovered and started this monthly awareness campaign to remind all women to do regular self exams and yearly mammograms.

Oscar cancer card

This month I decided to do an elegant card in black and gold using CASual Friday stamps, as a tribute to all those who have fought or who are fighting the battle of breast cancer. I have not gone through it myself but I imagine it must be hard to hang on to your self esteem when you are losing your hair to chemo or even your breasts to a mastectomy. I just want to say that the courage you have to go through all that and beat cancer, makes you one classy lady and I want to offer this shaker card to one of you. Just leave a comment below  and I’ll pick one of you incredible ladies to send this card to.

I made this shaker card after this card (Majestic Bloom) by Natasha of Znatka2007 who makes amazing interactive cards. I heat embossed everything with Wow embossing powder. The sequins from Pretty Pink Posh are actually only pink and white and are a special edition made for CASual Friday Calling All Sistahs collection. As I can’t add a video on my blog, you can see this card in action on my Instagram account here.

CAS-ual Friday is also giving away 15$ gift vouchers to their store to 3 commenters who comment along the blog hop by 12am EDT on the 19th of March. Here is the full blog hop list. Be sure to go and see what amazing cards the others have made and leave them some love too!

New Year’s Resolution

Cards, Die cuts, Interactive cards, Marbling, Stencil

Its been awhile since I’ve made New Year’s resolutions. I think its because I either forgot what they were to begin with, probably the day after the New Year’s Eve party…, or because I didn’t tell enough people what I was planning to do so I would be shamed into seeing it through! Well this year, I’m putting it out there in Blogland. My resolution for 2017 is…to send cards I make to my friends!

I know, its embarrassing. I make cards, yet I don’t send them to my friends for their birthdays, anniversaries…only my friends here get them. So what did I do with the 110 cards I made last year, cause they’re not taking shelf space decorating my house. I sent a few of them to my family in Singapore so they can sell them at the church fund raising or give them to friends, but a lot of them end up in my scrap bin when I decide I don’t really like them anymore!

This card is definitely not going to the scrap bin though. Its for a friend’s mother’s 75th birthday tomorrow. She’s an elegant lady who used to create costumes for the theatre, so I wanted something elegant but sweet at the same time, just like her!

This card was really inspired by the challenge at The Card Concept. They have a beautiful mood board at the moment, and I just had to make another card for their challenge. I first cut out a scallop circle with Sizzix die cut, on a gold card stock, and embossed it with Darice Wood grain embossing folder. I cut out a panel and adhered it to a black card stock and added the large polka dots washi tapes at the sides . I left the edges of the panel “raw” so that it would like more like wood. I created the shaker pocket, which actually sees right through in to the card, where I hand wrote in German: “Much love for your Birthday”.

oma-bday-card

To create the scallop circle border, I used the Sizzix scallop die to cut a scallop on another gold card stock,  I then used  a larger circle die to cut around the scallop opening on the card stock. I had a few flower die cuts using Altenew’s Peonie set, leftover from a “shaving foam” session, which I used to add a little more softness to the card.

Oma bday card cu.jpg

As its a see right through card, I had to decorate the other side of the shaker so I used the same scallop border but with  a polka dot paper instead.

Hope she likes it and that you did too!
