addicted to stamps

Hi all! Happy New Year to all my Asian readers who celebrate Chinese New Year! We have a new challenge over at the Addicted to Stamps and More challenge blog and I made a Chinese New Year for our “Holiday” theme, but you can join in with other holiday card or cards depicting the holidays you’ve been on.

The first day of the Chinese New Year started on the 5th of February this year, to coincide with the full moon, and in China, it is celebrated for 15 days, at least. In Singapore, where I grew up, we celebrated it for 3 days, starting with the New Year’s Eve Reunion dinner on the night before the New Year. Much like Thanksgiving in the States, people travel back to their families for this dinner and this causes the largest human migration in the world!

On the first day of the New Year, we visit the eldest family members first and as my dad was the eldest in his family, all his relatives came to visit us to pay their respects to my dad. On the 2nd day, we visited other relatives and on the third day, our non-Chinese friends were allowed to visit us. There was alot of eating going on during these visits and I loved visiting my father’s sisters as they were very good cooks!

There is also the tradition of exchanging red packets “ang pows” filled with cash which was given to all unmarried people, but that tradition changed to just children as more adults married later and later in life, or never got married. To be honest, very often, I dragged my feet and visited my relatives in my uncomfortable new clothes only to get those red packets of cash!

Well, I hope you’ll join us in our new challenge and I look forward to seeing your cards in the link up here. Thanks for stopping by!

I’m not a coffee drinker but my hubby loves it and for our housewarming, our friends bought us a Nespresso machine. We already had a coffee machine with an integrated grinder but as our new house has three floors & 2 kitchens (yes so much to clean…), I mentioned in passing to a girlfriend that it would be nice to have another machine for our 2nd kitchen. I forgot about it myself but my friend didn’t, so you can imagine our surprise when we got one, with 200 capsules along with it!

Espresso thanks main.jpg

Since then I’ve been meaning to make coffee themed Thank you cards but I didn’t have any coffee themed thank you stamps so when I saw the “Perk Up” stamp set from My Favorite Things, I got them straight away as they were just perfect for the occasion! I also got Concord & 9th’s “Let’s Chat” coffee stamps and I was ready to make my thank you cards.

Espresso thanks cu

I first stamped the coffee cup and saucer from Concorde & 9th in Altenew’s Dark Chocolate then stamped and masked Hero Arts layered hibiscus stamps around the saucer. I used Altenew inks to do the stamping. I wasn’t going for that colour combination, it was supposed to come out fuschia instead of red but I guess that’s what it looks like when you stamp on yellow first! Oh well I’ll know the next time. You can’t see it but I went over most of the petals with Spectrum Noir glitter markers so they really sparkle in real life.

So now I just have to make 5 of these…! Now I’m thinking I should have made an easier pattern as each card takes 2h to make, but my friends are worth it.

Well thanks for stopping by and I can’t “espresso” how happy I feel when you leave me your comments! Have great day!

Twofer Pet challenge

Cards, My Favorite Things, Twofer card challenge, Zig clean color real brush

Happy Monday everyone! Has your week started well? Mine has because I started crafting as soon as I got up! I usually clean the house on Mondays but as my mother in law is here and she likes to sleep in, I didn’t want to disturb her with the vacuum cleaner… good excuse no? 😉 Its also raining so I can’t do the gardening either, so all the conditions were perfect just to craft! Even better, when I finally finished my card and popped upstairs, my mil was cleaning the house! I’m really so lucky to have her here.

Furever friends twofer challenge main.jpg

I know I say this each time, but I LOVE the Twofer challenge where you have to make two different kinds of card with the same stamp. Its a great way to use my new stamps twice at the same time. The theme this month is Pets and as I just bought a new stamp from My Favorite Things called “Furever Friends”, this was a good opportunity to use it. This time I followed the rules exactly, using the same stamp and not just using the same stamp set, AND I remembered to make two different theme cards too!

April18Furever friends challenge

My first card was inspired by the color challenge at My Favorite Things. I first stencilled the background using MFT’s abstract stencil and sponged in Picked Raspberry and Mustard seed distress inks and then sprayed water on it. Once it was dry, I diecut it with the scallop rectangle die from MFT’s blueprint 20 set and in the middle I cut the scallop window also from MFT and cut it again in black and just used the black border on my card. I matted this scallop rectangle panel onto a white card base.  The pet stamp was cut with my Brother scan and cut and coloured in with Zigs clean color real brushes. The sentiment from the same stamp set was stamped with Versamark onto a small black rectangle card stock and heat embossed with white Wow embossing powder.

Furever friends dog n cat

The second card just came about on its own. All I knew was that I wanted them to be in a field of flowers, almost hidden by it. I stamped the pet stamp directly onto Clairefontaine multi-technique 250gm paper and proceeded to colour it with my Zigs again. This time though, I tried to colour in the dog after my Jack Russell, Lola. You can see below if I came close…

The field of flowers was created using 2 block stamps I bought when I first started stamping, so 2 years ago, but theres no brand on it. I coloured the stamps with Zigs and distress inks and stamped them onto my card and coloured in with my zigs again. I then sponged in Twisted Citron distress oxide for the background of my prairie. The cloudy sky was created with cloud masks I created myself and Mermaid lagoon Distress oxides. I then added the sentiment from Winnie and Walter onto a tag and hand drew in the little plane pulling it.

Lola

And this is my little Lola who modelled for me. She looks really cute but in reality she a real terror! Even though she only arrived 5 years ago, she’s the alpha male and doesn’t let our Belgian Shepard, Paco, ever forget it!

Well thanks so much for stopping by, I do hope you liked my cards. Wishing you a wonderful week! Mine just gets better as I’m off to London on Friday for a long weekend and I’ll be stuffing myself with all my fav Asian dishes!

I’m OWL Yours

Addicted to Stamps and More, Cards, My Favorite Things, Zig clean color real brush

HAPPY VALENTINE’s DAY!!! This will be the first of 2 posts today because I LOVE all of you faithful followers that take the time to stop by each time and I just want to shower you all with crafty goodness today!

So for my first post, I would like to share a card I made to entice you to join us at the Addicted to Stamps and More challenge, where this week’s theme is CAS – Clean and Simple. I kept it fairly clean and fairly simple, using the Abstract stencil and I’m Owl Yours stamp from My Favorite Things.

Feb MFT owl.jpg

I first sponged in distress oxide ink through my heart mask and while it was drying, I stamped the owl and 2 arrows on some card stock with Versafine black ink and ran it through my Brother’s scan and cut. I coloured the owl using my Zig clean color real brushes. As I needed a long arrow to pierce my stencilled heart, I cut the tip of one of the arrows and the end of the other and ran it through my Xyron sticker maker. I stuck the arrows onto the heart and placed my owl on top of it, making sure one of his little feet covered the joined part of the arrow so you couldn’t see the break. To finish I stamped the sentiment from the same stamp set.

Feb MFT owl cu

When I showed the card to my 14yr old son, he asked me why there was an arrow and why the heart was in pieces. Well, I said the owl needed to sit on something and the heart was shattered by the arrow, but it was going to be mended by the person who gets the heart… and its part of the design and I told him not to analyse my card too much!!! LoL! I really had to think hard to explain the card! And it reminded me again that most people don’t really look at the work that goes into the design but at the whole card, and what it’s supposed to convey. Luckily my daughter, who got the card to give to her boyfriend, just found it really cute. Phew!

Well I hope you’ll pop over to the Addicted to Stamps and More challenge blog and admire the other CAS cards my team mates made just for your viewing pleasure. I hope to see your creation in the link up on the challenge blog.

Thanks for stopping by and I really love reading your comments!

My card will probably be disqualified for the race as I didn’t use three separate stamp sets, but I wanted to join in the fun anyway! I actually don’t even have 3 different stamp sets from MFT but I just ordered more, so next year I will be ready!

Stretch your supplies

Card Challenge, Cards, Mama Elephant, My Favorite Things, Zig clean color real brush

There’s a new card challenge run by the amazing Darnell called Twofer Card Challenge where you have to make two different occasion cards using the same stamps and dies. I love this challenge as it enables me to use the same stamp or die set more than once without being repetitive. As I normally only use my stamps once before moving onto the next one, this will make me feel that I have really used my supplies and less guilty about buying new ones! 😉 Thanks so much Darnell! :))

Twofer Feb challenge.jpg

So for my first participation, I went further than using just one stamps/dies sets to make two cards. I used 3! The same Abstract stencil by My Favorite Things, Heart die by XCut and Nom Nom Kitties stamp set by Mama Elephant.

nom nom kitty couple

To make the first card, I diecut the heart from Xcut and used it as a mask to stencil in my distress oxides through the MFT Abstract stencil.  The heart diecut also has a faint stencilled image as I put it behind my stencil when I was wiping off the inks with a wet wipe. I darkened the original image so you could see the stencilled heart below.

20180212_172608.jpg

I stamped the kitties onto a white card stock and FUSSY CUT it!!! I have a Brother scan and cut and I still have to fussy cut some images when the machine decides not to pick up the image! 😡 Anyway carrying on, I coloured my kitties with my Zig clean color real brushes, stuck them onto the heart and stuck the heart onto the card. As I didn’t have the sentiment I wanted, I created it using my Artemio  label maker.

nom nom kitty single

For the 2nd card, I used the negative of my diecut heart as a mask to colour in the heart through the same MFT stencil and distress oxides again. The kitty from the same Mama Elephant stamp set was coloured in using my Zigs as well. The sentiment from Winnie and Walter was stamped with Versafine ink and it implies a good birthday is one where we get to eat good food. Any Asian will understand as we’re all foodies!

Well I hope you enjoyed both my cards.  I ‘m also trying to make less flower cards so hopefully this will be a start of a series of cute cards before I go back to my flowers! Thanks for visiting and your comments make my day!!
