Its summer in Ulm!

Cards, Die cuts, Heat embossing, mixed media, stamping, Stencil, Watercolor

Yes! After the long cold winter, summer has come early to Ulm! Since the beginning of June, we have been having sun and temperatures up to 30deg C! I’m already so tanned just spending late afternoons swimming in our neighbourhood lake, after the kids come out of school. Heres a pic of me and the kids… lol!

Yes we share the lake with a family of swans and they can get quite aggressive! Have a look at a funny video I took of them here.

So warm temperatures and blooming flowers inspired me to make this “mixed mediums” card, along with the gorgeous inspiration picture from the challenge at Time Out. I call it mixed mediums cause it has stamping, stencilling, heat embossing, embossing paste, die cuts, water colouring…!

If you follow my blog, you know I’m not really a mixed media person, but I have been looking at my own bookmark creations above, which have been sitting on my crafting table ever since I made them for my book club 2 months ago, and they are a constant reminder that my few attempts at it didn’t turn out too badly 😉  So I decided to try a mixed media card with as many mediums as I could fit in without it being too “heavy”!

I used the Stamplorations “Bloom Boldly” stencil. To colour in the leaves I used a sponge dauber and Stampin’ Up inks, and gold embossing paste for the flower. As I didn’t mask the leaves when adding the paste, I wasn’t able to get a smooth finish on the flower, but now it just looks like light reflecting off the petals… 😉 The dabs of pinks were added in by my Zig clean color real brushes.

For the Hummingbird, also from Stamplorations, I first stamped it on watercolour paper with Versamark and heat embossed it using Wow embossing powder. I then had a lot of fun colouring it with my Zigs! I fussy cut it and stuck it onto my card.

The “Love you” die cut from Xcut added the balance I think it needed on the left, along with the pink sequin.

So I hope you like my “many mediums” card and leave me a comment to let me know what you thought! Hope its heating up where you are too.

Mixed media CAS card

mixed media, stamping, Stencil

The theme over at CAS Mix Up card challenge this month is to use Embossing pastes or gels and I have been thinking all month about how to make a card with it and still have it clean and simple.

And today it suddenly hit me… obviously before we had to leave for a day trip to Munich. But I managed to finish the card just before we left and as I used the colours from The Paper Players challenge, I wanted to post my card there too and it was ending in afew hours, so I’m writing this post in the car!

To make the card I first sponged through a stencil from Memory Box with Stampin Up’s Tempting Turquoise.  I then laid the beautiful flower stencil from Stamplorations down over the sponged area and added gold embossing paste through it. I drew in the leaves with my Zigs Clean color real brush.

I stamped the sentiment with Versafine and the card was finished! Oh I added a clear sequin to one of the petals cause I touched it before it was dry and it left an awful mark!

So I hope you like my mixed media but still CAS card.  Thanks for stopping by and let me know what you think!

Books & Book Marks

Cards, Colour pencils, Die cuts, mixed media, stamping, Stencil

Going on holidays is nice…except I can’t craft! 😉 So after a long break, I started reading again. That was also quite necessary as I am now running an English book club at the local International Women’s Academy here in Ulm! The IWA is like a community centre I guess, with courses in everything you can think of and they have a section just for women! Why’s that? Probably because there is a culture here that mothers with young children shouldn’t work, so once the kids are in school, they have plenty of time to do other things if they want to.

The International section of this “Women’s Club” started last year. Its objective is to help women combat the isolation they feel coming to a country where they don’t speak the language nor know anyone apart from the husbands they came with. They hold courses and get togethers in English and other languages apart from German. So many professional women who are now unable to work because they gave up their career to follow their husbands here, found a place where they could meet other women and make friends.

So I’m running a book club in this section and I’m so happy I’m finally doing it as I’ve always wanted to ever since I left Singapore…29 years ago! So far I have introduced an oldie but favourite book of mine called “The Joy Luck Club” by Amy Tan to share some of my culture with the Germans, Italians, Americans…in the club. And as a little gift, I made a book mark for each of my “book clubbers”.

This bookmark was made using Stamplorations stamps and stencils and Distress Inks. The flower die cut was a free gift from Tattered Lace that came with Prima Makes magazine which I picked up when I was in the UK. (I actually bought the same magazine twice just to get the 2 different dies…😊 ) It was cut from a failed emboss resist card project so it actually sparkles!
