I am so happy and proud to announce that I am now part of the Design Team for a great Challenge blog called The Sisterhood of Crafters! Woohoo! I was in the car on my way to France for our first beach vacation in 3 years, when I received the email from Darlene to inform me that I was picked to be one of their 4 new DT members! It was great but frustrating at the same time, as all I wanted to do was turn around and head home to make a card for my first challenge with them! Lol!
But that was the first thing I did do once I got home! The theme for this fortnight is “Where in the World” and we have to make anything that represents the part of the world, country and/or state where you live. It wasn’t that easy for me as I didn’t have any stamps representing Germany, so I decided to create a cut file with my Silhouette Portrait and make a box card. The above image is the silhouette of Ulm from the other side of the Danube River.
As I made a card about where I have been living for the last 4 years, I should maybe tell you something about it too. Ulm is a small city (pop 123k for 119km2) between Munich and Stuttgart, but it is situated in a very rich part of Germany; Baden Württemberg and Bavaria, with an unemployment rate of 3,4%. It is the place where Albert Einstein was born, and it also boasts the tallest steeple (161,53m) in the world, on the Ulmer Munster Cathedral (which was incidentally financed by the citizens of Ulm, and not the Church).
The boat you see on the Danube, which I coloured blue with my Prismacolor pencils, (and by the way I have never seen the Danube blue and I’m wondering which part of the Danube is blue to have merited the song about it…) is a typical flat bottom boat called “Ulmer Schachtel” – “box of Ulm” -from which it was built, during the 16th Century. It has a flat bottom so as to carry heavy loads and transport goods, by floating with the current downstream to the communities of Vienna, Budapest, Belgrade, and the Black Sea. Once it arrived at its destination, it was dissembled and the wood was sold off, and the merchants walked back and built a new one!!
If you look at the tower on the right which is leaning a little, there is a funny story about that. It seems some butchers were jailed there for having sold bad meat and as they were all very heavy and crowded in one corner of the tower, the tower started leaning on its side!
I coloured the sky with my new Distress Oxide inks from Tim Holtz, flicked some goosebumps and water on it, added a few stars and the background was done. I stamped the word “Mitbringsel” using Karten Kunst stamp with Versamark clear ink, poured some silver Wow embossing powder on it and melted it with my heat gun. “aus Ulm” was handwritten by me with a silver marker. Together they mean something like “Memories from Ulm” and I intend to give this to a friend who is leaving.
So I hope you’ll join in the fun and make something that represents where you’re from. I can’t wait to see your creations!

Note: The stand in metal, which is propping up my card, is of the Ulmer Munster Cathedral & holds a stone from the cathedral itself. This was specially made by some friends of mine at their company Sailer for our kids school’s find raising event.
